Night safari in the Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta in Botswana is famous for its vast green plains, flooded in season and becoming a lush habitat for all types of wild animals.

One of the most unique experiences I had was during the night at Mma Dinare, adjcaent to Moremi Game reserve on the south-eastern side of the Okavango Delta. It's a beautiful place in the middle of nature where you can only arrive by small aircraft flying 400 meters above the Okavango river.

After a game drive and a great family dinner at the lodge, our guide started to escort us to our tent with his flashlight, it was time to sleep. We were crossing a wooden footbridge that links all the luxury tents of the lodge, when suddenly our guide asked us to stop. We could hear a lion roaring in the dark just at the entrance of our tent... I start smiling, I was amazed by the scene but our guide looked very concerned. He decided to bring us back quickly to the main deck and call for backup. After waiting with the rest of the staff, three guides came back. A lion was lying in the middle of the pass eating a recently killed antelope. The guides had to chase the lion away to allow us access to our tents, which was a very sensitive mission as the dead antelope was still lying in the pass and could have attracted hyenas or other predators.

Once everyone was safely inside their tents, we stated to hear something moving around the tent again. The lion was back, we watched him coming back to enjoy his feast. It was such a special moment to capture from our tent. The next morning, we could hear the vultures in the sky and only the antelope carcass remained. A true story of the wildlife in Botswana !
